As an amateur historian, I am always struck by the importance of primary source information. Great detail and nuance regarding the pre Civil War time period. Anyone interested in Illinois history will love this book. I was half way through it and started over because there was so much to take in! Harvey Lee Ross tells the story as though he were talking to his grandchildren sitting on the floor.
As one of the Ross descendants and still carrying on our 200 year occupation as an innkeeper, I was delighted to find this book had been reprinted. I have a copy of the original and purchased 2 copies as xmas gifts for my adult children. Harvey Ross was a true curmudgeon and his book pulls no punches about early Illinois and people like Lincoln and Jackson. A great uncensored peek into Americana.
Ross writes about his own time with family and such famous characters as Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and others who he actually knew.
This is a wonderfully enjoyable book of early pioneer and Illinois history as told by someone who experienced those times. The book was a delightful good read.
